New England's 21st Century Dominance
It was a cold day in Minnesota. Tom Brady and his Patriots marched in having won 5 rings: There first vs the Rams on a game winning field goal from Adam Vinatieri, Then they defeated the Carolina Panthers, They went on to face the Philadelphia Eagles and barley defeated them. They went on a drought almost being perfect but loosing in the big game to the Giants in 2008 an again in 2011. Then the Patriots ended the drought winning another Super Bowl vs The Seattle Seahawks. Malcolm Butler sealed the Patriots their fourth Super Bowl ring. Then in Super Bowl LI they were down 28-3. Everyone but the Pats knew what was going to happen… a huge comeback. Tom was throwing TD’s left and right and their defense was outright amazing. They won giving them 5 rings. The Patriots were favored to win their 6th Super Bowl ring.
Fly Eagles Fly
The Eagles coming in to the 2017 season had no rings, a completely different team from 2 years ago. The Pederson era was in go mode. The Eagles decided to select North Dakota star, Carson Wentz, second overall in the 2016 NFL draft. Carson Played good in his rookie year, but had no help on offense. They finished 7-9. In the offseason they would go through a key phase that made them the contender they are today. They decided to go for star receiver, Alshon Jeffery. Then the Eagles signed powerback Legarrette Blount to help a sub par run game. They drafted Tennessee star Derek Barnett. He is an excellent edge rusher. Philly started strong, Wentz played like a MVP candidate and the Eagles were flying high. They made a trade to get Jay Ajayi from Miami to pair with Blount during the season. Then, in Week 14, the Eagles and the Rams met. Two of the top teams in the NFC potentially the game of the year. It was a barn burner, Then, on the Rams 2 yard line, Wentz scrambled out and dove for the end zone but two defenders collided into his knee and his season was OVER. The MVP award was lost and the Eagles had to wonder if they could win in the playoffs. They handed the reigns to Nick Foles, a proven veteran that has struggled over the past 2 years. The Eagles played ok during the final stretch. Going in to the playoffs, they were underdogs. They beat the Falcons, then destroyed the Vikings to pave the path to Super Bowl LII. Of course they would be underdogs again in the Super Bowl.
The Big Game
Both teams were ready. The first quarter had minimal scoring Philly scored a field goal and a Alshon Jeffery Touchdown with a extra point. The Patriots kicked a field goal. 9-3 Eagles. In the second quarter, Legarrette Blount ran one in from 21 yards out making it 15-3. The Pats would kick a field goal and make it 15-6. Then Foles threw a interception that shifted momentum. The Pats would score on that next drive making it 15-12. The Eagles drove down to the goal line after that. What happened next will be remembered for along time. Nick Foles pretended to walk up to the line of scrimmage to change a play. The Center snapped the ball to the running back who then handed off the ball off to the tight end. The Patriots went after the tight end but forgot about Nick Foles who snuck into the end zone. The tight end quickly threw the ball to him for a touchdown. The Eagles later said that play was called the Philly Special. 22-12 at Halftime. After the terrible Halftime Show, the second half started. Rob Gronkowski woke up, scoring on the Pats first drive of the second half. Philly answered with an awesome Corey Clement catch for a touchdown. Brady responded as well getting a TD to Chris Hogan. It was fast paced and both offenses were really good. Philly kicked a field goal on their next possession making it 32-26 eagles. The Pats would respond taking the lead on a Gronk touchdown reception, 33-32 Patriots. The Eagles drove down the field and Zach Ertz scored a touchdown. 38-33 Eagles. The Patriots got the ball back, but Brandon Graham forced a fumble and the Eagles recovered. The Eagles held on at the end when the Patriots threw up a Hali Mary. When the game ended the Eagles won there first Super Bowl and Nick Foles was the MVP. The Patriots had to leave the field without another Super Bowl. After watching the Eagles hold up the Lombardi Trophy and proudly proclaim the underdogs won, you got the sense this Super Bowl will be remembered for a long time.
